my “Angel” collection

I have never really been a grand collector of anything. When my daughter passed away 14 years ago, (I really need to write a post about that…actually a series of posts) I started collecting angels. When I had a birthday or Christmas came around that is what my family got me… Angels…always angels. About a year ago I said to Richard I needed to buy another shelf unit to put some of my angels on (they numbered 100+). He said maybe you need to downsize. That statement made me revisit my reason for keeping all of them in the first place. Originally, my thought was that I had an angel in heaven and THAT is what they symbolized. That was before I started my walk with Jesus. When you begin a personal relationship with our creator, it makes you look at life in a whole new light.

In addition to my angels I had a small rock collection. Among them were rocks from Mt. Rushmore, The Grand Canyon, Devils Tower, The Badlands, and other places I had visited. Most of them were collected when other people influenced my thinking, actions, and way of life. I recently looked at those rocks and thought that not only were they of places I had visited, they were reminders of a past life I was choosing to forget. A life of living in the world, and making bad decisions and not looking towards the Father for help.

So as you may have guessed, I got rid of the rocks.

In today’s world, even material objects can be seen as other gods before God. Do you put your faith in your money? Your clothes? Music? Family? Social Status? What is it that makes you, each and everyday, make the decisions you make?

“Of course I don’t worship anyone other than God,” you might say. But how often do you pray? How many times are you just too busy? How often do you let God take care of the work or do you just take matters into your own hands to make sure it gets done when and how you want it done?

In Exodus 20:1-4, the bible tells us; And God spoke all these words: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.”

God wasn’t joking when He said not to put any other gods before Him. Other gods can be in many forms. In truth, the real joy and fulfillment of letting God take control of your life is the most freeing choice any one can make.

True freedom lies in knowing that because you love God so much and trust He will take care of you and that He will never disappoint you. You are freer to live your life and be of assistance to others who may be struggling in their walk of faith.

We all have a wonderful chance to be Christ-like to others and help them walk the path that we are walking. In John 14:13-14 it says…And I will do whatever you ask in My Name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask Me for anything in My Name and I will do it.

I had angels on a shelf to comfort me after the loss of my daughter. It took me stepping back 13 years later and saying for the last 8 years or so they are just pretty things on a shelf that I THOUGHT comforted me. When I looked at them from the perspective of someone who has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, it seemed kinda silly for them to take up space on the shelf collecting dust. I prayed and asked God to help with the decision in the removal of them from my life. It was easier than I thought. I had several sets and several large ones that I gave to friends. Once I made the decision to get rid of them…I couldn’t believe how easy it was to just box them up and move em out.I could have only done this with God’s help. He knew it was time for them to go a long time ago, He was just waiting for me to catch up with his plan.

I now use the shelf to house Kelsey’s school books and homeschooling supplies. A much more practical use. 🙂

Not in our money, clothes, music, friends, etc. can we place our total trust and know that everything will be taken care of and experience true joy. You can rest assured that if you trust God completely he will answer your prayers.

  1. Jeannie,
I wanted to comment on what a great blog you have, I try to check in on yours and Richard’s sometimes just to keep the boys informed of what you all are doing. But, this one really touched me. I also have had to do some “purging” of things from the past and realize like you, that it’s not the things, it’s the memories we need to hold close. I am Women’s Leader at our church and during my message at tonight’s meeting, which was about “Moving Past Your Past”, one of my points was about letting go of unhealthy attachments, including people and/or things. I shared some of what you had written here. I got quite a few “Amens” during that part of the message. Have a blessed day!
