This is actually a post I did almost 6 years ago. When I made the decision to home school Kelsey I not only got objections from people who didn’t think I could do it, I got very strong objections from family. Still to this day there are family members who think that I should give up homeschooling her and get a job to help support my family. Let me say this…I will not compromise on God’s word. Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” Some will say that this means in a scriptural manner, not in a secular manner. However His word does say this…1 Timothy 6:3-5 “If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, eventhe words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself” What better arguement than those verses to NOT send your child to public school. We monitor everything our kids do so they will be protected, yet we send them to the most Godless place to receive their education.

I am beginning to tire of the many articles, essays and responses I keep running across on the Internet on what has become to be known as the “socialization issue.”
What people refer to, as socialization is NOT an issue! I think it has become a word made up among the official home school naysayers. When someone asks you the question (“What about SOCIALIZATION?”), I begin by asking him or her, “What do you mean by socialization?” They will more than likely proceed with some variation on the following theme: “You know, having your kids spend time with other kids their age. Hanging out with their friends, stuff like that.” At that point I will no longer respond with the usual, “Oh Kelsey can get plenty of socialization while being home schooled! She can be in 4-H and Awanas, and Sunday school and Home School band and she can volunteer at the nursing homes etc.etc. In fact she has so many opportunities for socialization that she never had before that I would probably be “socially” busier than I am now. YaDa YaDa YaDa.” Why not? Because I did research on what socialization was and believe me that is not what socialization really is!
Here is what I will respond with from now on: “Oh, I think the word you are looking for is socializing. Socialization is actually defined as the process by which the norms and standards of our society are passed from one generation to the next. I’ve never really thought that nine-year old child would be a good source of information on the correct standards of behavior in our family and in society as a whole. As for socializing, I remember from my school days that it was something you weren’t supposed to be doing during class!” LOL!
I do not have to defend my decision to home school Kelsey. It is a decision that, with God’s help and a long course of prayer that Richard and I have made. It is OUR decision because we are her parents. Not the law, other parents, family, or satan can make us do otherwise. Stop telling me about all the opportunities kids have for “socialization” and start gently exposing them to the real issue here– a lot of what kids learn from other kids in social situations is simply living according to “The Law of the Jungle.” In our family, we have a higher set of laws to follow. And that is God’s Laws. And THAT my friends, is not what is being taught in our public schools.
What is being taught is what the naysayers want to call “socialization”. The kids are being ridiculed for whatever reason. Made fun of, teased, and I don’t know about you but I am trying to teach my child respect and to treat others with respect. We pride ourselves on things in our house. Putting God first…putting others second…and ourselves last. That is what God commands us to do. And………..”As for me and my house we will serve the Lord”
