I think one of the biggest problems we have as Christians is that we SAY we believe God’s word. Do we believe it to be the true, God breathed, Holy Spirit inspired Word of God? Or do we just float through life saying we believe it? If we truly believed God’s word…it would stand to reason that we would follow it to the exact specifications that He has commanded. It is kind of like making a cake. If we want a chocolate cake, and you put vanilla in it, you aren’t going to have the end result you had hoped for. Likewise, if you are going to follow God’s commandments, and then continue to lie, we are not going to have an outcome of pleasing to God. If we believe that God’s word is true then we have to believe that we were created to please and Honor Him.
In James 1:22-25 it says “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”
It is important to listen to what God’s Word says, but it is much more important to obey it, to do what it says. We can measure the effectiveness of our Bible study time by the effect it has on our behavior and attitudes. Do you pout into action what you have studied? As believers we are free to live as God created us to live. Of course, this does not mean that we are free to do as we please. We are now free to obey God.
If you say you believe God’s Word to be the truth, yet fail to do it, it looks like you do not believe it, does it not? If then, you believe God’s Word, you will then have NO hesitation in also doing what His Word says to do, IF we believe everything God says in His Word. If we really believed, then we could do nothing but ACT like we believe and Do what God has asked us to do to overcome our problems, our sicknesses and our fears.
So how do we carry out the task of actually believing, and showing it? This is a hard question to answer but yet it is so simple. We can carry out the task by simply doing what God tells us to do. Now I know this seems impossible, but rest assured it isn’t as hard as it seems.
In James 4:7-10 it tells us this: “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
Although God and the devil are at war, we don’t have to wait until the end to see who will win. God has already defeated satan and when Christ returns, the devil and all he stands for will be eliminated forever. satan is here now, however, and he is trying to win us over to his evil cause. With the Holy Spirit’s power, we can resist the devil and he will flee from us.
How can you follow God’s Word as truth? James give us five ways:
- Submit to God (4:7) Yield to His authority and will, commit your life to Him and His control, and be willing to follow Him.
- Resist the devil (4:7) Don’t allow satan to entice and tempt you.
- Wash your hands and purify your hearts (4:8) Be cleansed from sin, replacing your desire to sin with your desire to experience God’s purity.
- Grieve and mourn and wail in sincere sorrow for your sins (4:9) Don’t be afraid to express deep heartfelt sorrow for what you have done.
- Humble yourself before the Lord, and he will lift you up. (4:10) Humbly obey God regardless of present circumstances, and in His good time He will lift you up.
2 Chronicles 7:14 tells us this…..”if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
God is waiting on us to take the first step. It is really as simple as looking up towards Him and vowing to live a life that is pleasing to him. God will not honor us unless we honor Him first. We must humble ourselves, seek Him fully, and turn from sin. Then, and only then, will He heal this nation and make it a better place to live.
Where is your heart with God today? Do you merely say you believe? Or do you believe it and LIVE it?
